Traditional radio has been threatened so many times over the 100 or so years: First it was television, cassette tapes, CD's, iPods.
Yet, after all the new gadgets, here we are: Still on the air.
The latest so-called "radio killer" was XM/Sirius Satellite radio. When it first hit the market, listeners would always ask me, "what are y'all (AM/FM radio people) gonna do now that there is satellite?" I said, "watch." When it's all said and done, traditional radio will still be here. Well, another one bites the dust...
XM/Sirius is preparing for a possible bankruptcy. They have accumulated billions of dollars in debt, and can't repay its creditors. Yes, some people paid to lose the commercials of a traditional radio station, but not the masses that XM/Sirius expected. I don't imagine sat-radio will go away immediately, but who knows what will happen to them next.
As another gadget goes by the wayside, I invite you to snuggle up again to your favorite radio station. Call the local DJ and say hi. The slow economy has been tough on us radio broadcasters, and we need your continued support to keep us going too. To support us, all you have to do is when you hear a commercial on the air, go by that business to spend your hard-earned dollar instead of that internet site. When you want to hear new music, turn us on. When you want to hear your morning friends, turn us on. When the traffic or weather gets bad, turn us on.
We are still the only gadget where all you have to do is press the "on" button to listen. No extra hardware or internet connection needed. Most importantly, no subscription required.
Thanks for listening to (terrestrial) radio.

I hear that XM/Sirius are not playing commercials too. I thought that was their big selling point- No commercials.
I guess it's either that or up-ping the subscription.
Todd's right...we here at local radio are nice, cool and FREE! Save radio!!!
We should protest =)!
