I grew up just north of
Houston and grew up listening to the radio. All the big stations:
KRBE, 93Q (when it was pop,)
KILT and
KIKK were my favorites as a kid. One day I figured,
I wanted to be on the radio too. Got around to high school and got that chance. At the time, I didn't realize that this is what I'd still be doing 14 years from now. Made the circuit around Texas and landed on the air in Houston at KIKK and KILT for a little time. A dream come true to work for the stations you grew up listening to!
Last weekend, I drove down to Houston to be a part of the very first Houston Radio Reunion. I knew I wasn't one of the legends in the market, but I definitely wanted to schmooze with them!! It was great! I remembered when I signed up there was only a short list of folks. When I got to
Tin Hall, there were over 400 people on the list! An amazing turnout of some of the "who's who" in Houston Radio.
I got to see the guy that got it all started for me,
Barry Kaye, at that little station in (at the time) Huntsville,
KVST. Barry is one of those aforementioned Houston Radio legends who made a name for himself in Houston and later in Los Angeles. I remember him telling me..."what are you crazy?" when I said I wanted to be on the radio 14 years ago. When I saw him at the reunion, I said laughing... "it's hasn't been
that bad."
